When speaking with operators about challenges in unconventional completions, several themes surface time and time again. One of the most pressing topics operators are concerned with is optimizing well spacing, and in turn production.
The well spacing equation becomes many times more complex when working with stacked plays such as in the Permian Basin – with vertical spacing to consider as well as lateral spacing.
While it is possible to drill many different spacing tests and learn which ‘regime’ is ideal after gathering 1-3 years of production data, many operators are short circuiting that time frame by microseismic and other technologies to determine ideal well spacing for each section of the field within a month of fracking a pad.
